- light to medium arthrotic pain
- yet satisfactory conditionof the cartilage tissue (according to x-ray and magnetic resonance imaging)
- surgery undesirable based upon general condition or accompanying diseases
- as an accompanying measure to surgery

Conservative therapeutic measures can not replace surgery in all casesbut can usually delay it while easing pain. In particular cartilage strengthening medications, the "liquid prosthesis", and PST will have increased value in the future.
