Signs of Arthrosis Arthrosis (arthrosis deformans) is a degenerative, non-inflammatory joint disease. Vertebral joints are frequently affected, as well as hip-, knee-, ankle-, and shoulder joints. More than 20 million people in Germany suffer from arthrosis. Unspecific joint pain is usually an indication of the beginning or presence of arthrosis, especially by overexertion, since the friction of the joint surfaces increases and the shock absorbing function diminishes. Also, a so-called "preliminary pain" is characteristic when the joint has to be first "warmed up". In order to reduce the friction of the joint surfaces, a fluid (synovia) is increasingly produced by the body. If, however, too much synovia is produced, the joint swells and becomes bruised. Movement is then possible, but restricted, and usually painful as well.
