Opioids and modern morphine preparations are among the most effective means against pain. They influence the pain suppression in the brain and spinal cord, and therefore don't act upon the affected organ or part of the body. In contrast to various neighboring countries, preparations containing opioids are prescribed only very reluctantly for long-term treatment in Germany because of the risk of dependency - and only then in the case of strong pain. Yet with proper application and individually adjusted dosage, there is no risk of dependency. Opioids can help not only cancer patients live a pain-free life, but also many other types of pain patients as well.
