Injection of an x-ray contrast medium or medication in the disc Following local anesthetic, a fine cannula is inserted at an angle of circa 50 degrees from the side into the middle of the disc. After injecting approximately one milliliter of contrast medium in the disc, the patient is questioned about his pain. An exact diagnosis of the degenerated disc can then be made. After the discography is conducted (see above), and following injection of a contrast medium and assessment of the patient's pain indications, various medications are injected through a fine cannula in the disc. After injection of a local anesthetic or a weak cortisone solution, opiates can also be directly injected intra-disc (directly into the disc) for precise pain treatment.
