Pain therapy. Botulinum-Toxin

Pain therapy. Botulinum-Toxin

New therapy for stress-related headaches, as well as back and neck pain

Through the injection of minimal amounts of botulinum-toxin in the painful muscle cramps (the so-called trigger points), the vicious circle of muscle cramping and pain is broken. Extremely thin cannulae are used, as with insulin injections. Botulinum-toxin is made up of the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. In small doses it interrupts the transfer of impulses from nerve fibers to the musculature. Consequence: owing to a temporary paralysis, the muscles relax and stress-related headaches, as well as back and neck pain disappears. A noticeable effect occurs two to ten days after the injection. It lasts three to six months, and can be repeated. Following successive injections, the botulinum-toxin works even up to one year.

Indication

  • pain originating in the musculature that can reach from the cervical spinal column to the arms and even to the fingers (myofascial cervicobrachial syndrome with triggerpoints)
  • migraines (through elimination of the triggerpoints)
  • deep back pain originating from the musculatur
  • classical myofascial deep back pain without radicle failure)
  • a condition following a sprain of the cervical spinal column with or without a crooked neck as a result of the musculature (distortion trauma with our without torticollis spasticus)

Contraindication

  • general muscular weakness
  • taking of marcumar (a blood-thinning medication)
  • pain caused by the pressure of intervertebral disc on a nerve root (nerve root compression syndrome resulting from an intervertebral disc)
