But what about bony spinal canal constrictions caused by arthrosis? Many people with severe back pain don't suffer from (or only from) one herniated disc. In such cases, they can also have a bony constriction of the spinal canal. A computertomographic or magnetic resonance imaging scanner confirms this diagnosis. Through severe degeneration, the vertebral joints enlarge and crowd the spinal canal. The nerves running through spinal canal are pressed together. As a consequence, the patient suffers from chronic lower back pain and can no longer walk longer distances. As a result, there some people who can only go five to ten meters before having to rest, because the pain is so intense and their legs have become too weak.
Up until now, the affected semi-circular vertebral canal and vertebral joints were largely removed on both sides. Through this, the spinal column often became instable, because the individual vertebra could grind into one another. Therefore, we prefer microscopic entry, through which we open the spinal canal only on one side in order to widen it through a special technique . That gives the spinal nerves enough room once again. The load-bearing capacity of the spinal column is not essentially reduced by this procedure.
After the operation under full narcosis, the patient can get up and move around on the next day, and often notices an immediate reduction in pain. He then remains in the clinic approximately another five days and wears a special corset for four weeks to protect from harmful motion. Desk work is possible after three weeks, whereas physical activity is possible again first after six weeks.
